Colorectal Cancer Prevention: The Importance of a Balanced Tunisian Plate

A Public Health Priority in Tunisia

Colorectal cancer has become one of the most common cancers in Tunisia. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health (2023), the country recorded 3,788 new cases. It now ranks 4th among men and 2nd among women. This disease, which mainly affects people over 50, is strongly correlated with our lifestyle habits.

During a recent intervention, the National Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (Zouhair Kallel) recalled a fundamental fact: prevention starts with what's on our plate.

Key Nutritional Recommendations

Balanced Tunisian Plate

To protect your digestive system, here are the adjustments recommended by experts:

What to Prioritize

  • Fiber and antioxidants: Massively integrate vegetables, fruits, legumes (very common in Tunisian cuisine like chickpeas, lentils, broad beans), and whole grains.
  • Blue fish: Recommended at least three times a week, it is rich in omega-3 (sardines, mackerel).

What to Limit

  • Processed meats: Deli meats and ultra-processed meats are major risk factors.
  • Sugar, salt, and bad fats: Avoid fast food and favor homemade cooking ("diari").
  • Cooking methods: Limit very high-temperature cooking or excessive barbecuing which can generate harmful substances.

Warning Signs

Cancer Prevention Flowchart

If these symptoms last for more than two weeks, medical consultation is essential:

  • An unexplained change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation).
  • The presence of blood in the stool.
  • Persistent abdominal pain or cramps.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Adopting a preventive diet is not a constraint; it is a long-term investment in your health.
